Prabhdeep Kaur

Prabhdeep Kaur is a physician and public health professional involved in research, teaching, and implementation science for scaling evidence-based public health interventions and policies in the healthcare system. She is currently working as Scientist (F) and Head of Division of Noncommunicable Diseases at ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR-NIE), Chennai. She serves as Principal Investigator for the ‘India Hypertension Control Initiative’, a multi-partner implementation science project aiming to improve hypertension treatment and control in 100+ districts across all states. She is also the Course Coordinator for the FETP-NCD Fellowships and the India Epidemic Intelligence Service (South Hub), programs which have trained over 250 field epidemiologists from state health departments across the country. Since joining ICMR-NIE over 18 years ago, Prabhdeep has worked in a wide range of areas in public health, including policies and initiatives to improve prevention and treatment of diabetes and cervical cancer in various Indian states, as well as outbreak investigations, public health surveillance and epidemiological research for various noncommunicable diseases (NCD) such as hypertension, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular diseases and cancers. Her dual training in Internal Medicine and Field Epidemiology has provided a unique perspective and enhanced her engagement with multiple stakeholders to advance NCD as priority for the public health system in several Indian states. She has worked closely with the public health department of the Government of Tamil Nadu for more than a decade to develop a NCD program, and joined the Chief Minister’s Expert Task Force for COVID-19 control in Tamil Nadu in April 2020. She was also part of the WHO’s global Cervical Cancer Elimination expert group from 2019 to 2022, and a key member of the core team that provided technical support to Government of Punjab for the first pilot project to introduce the HPV vaccine in India. Her work has also led to 70+ papers in national and international peer-reviewed journals. Prabhdeep obtained her MBBS and postgraduate degree in General Medicine in Chennai, at that time one of the few girls in her town who went outside her home state of Punjab for college education. She also has a doctorate in Public Health and Policy from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London.
