Apoorva Sharan is an epidemiologist with crosscutting experience in immunization research, programme and policy in low- and middle-income countries. She currently serves as the global safety expert for novel Oral Poliovirus Vaccine type 2 at the World Health Organization’s Global Polio Eradication Initiative. She graduated from the Swiss Tropical & Public Health Institute, Basel with a PhD in Epidemiology (summa cum laude) in 2022 and obtained a master’s degree in microbiology & immunology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2012.
Over the past 10 years, Apoorva has successfully led several global and national projects aiming to develop innovative, data-driven approaches for addressing persistent challenges to vaccine safety and acceptance in resource constrained settings. In previous roles, she supervised the development of a comprehensive immunization portfolio at Jhpiego India as the National Programme Officer; developed innovative methodologies for vaccine pharmacovigilance in resource-constrained settings at the International Clinical Epidemiology Network; and helped institutionalize systems for evidence-based decision making as the lead officer for the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI) secretariat.
