2023 Leadership Journey Project: Community views and support: Empowerment of community women to participate in vector control activities in Mwanza, Tanzania
Dr. Basiliana Emidi is a skilled Principal Research Scientist in Medical Entomology with over 18 years of experience in research management and coordination of numerous research projects . She has participated in several research studies in Entomology and is the country coordinator for women in vector control in the Pan-African Mosquito Control Association (PAMCA) in Tanzania.
Basiliana is the head of the Parasitic Diseases Research programme and the Principal Research Scientist in Medical Entomology in Mwanza centre at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) Mwanza Centre Tanzania. She has also worked with the National Health Research Ethics Committee where she developed the Client Service Charter. She has been a Vector Control Specialist, Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MOHCDGEC), at the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP), Dodoma (2018-2020); Senior Research Scientist (Medical Entomologist),National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), Headquarters, Dar es Salaam and a Research Scientist(Medical Entomologist) at NIMR), Headquarters, Dar es salaam and Tukuyu Centre, Mbeya.
Basiliana is a Post-doctoral Research Fellow and has a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Medical Entomology; a Master of Science in Applied Zoology and a Bachelor of Science General. She has also received awards as a Mid-career Woman in Vector Control Excellence Award, First Young Women Scientist Award, Mount Kilimanjaro Scientific Award and the Ngorongoro Conservation Prize.
Fun Fact: She likes to accomplish her to-do list as planned and is fascinated by adventures because it gives her opportunity to learn about new things and networking with people. In addition, having grown up in the village, she is fond of field activities and is passionate about empowering women and youth in mosquito vector control activities
