Dr. Mukui is the Head of HIV Disease Portfolio at the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative; an international, not-for-profit research and development organization whose mission is to discover, develop, and deliver treatments for neglected patients and diseases around the world. Under her portfolio, she oversees the implementation of both research & development, and access work in paediatric HIV and advanced HIV disease in the organization. She holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery and a master’s degree in Public Health & Epidemiology.
She has extensive experience in leading delivery of large and complex public health programs having been the head of Kenya’s HIV care and treatment program in the Ministry of health for close to a decade, where she oversaw rapid scale of treatment, and implementation of innovative service delivery approaches. She has also held multiple other leadership positions within the Ministry. Dr Irene co-chairs the WHO HIV Drug Resistance Network Steering Group and has been a member of the numerous global technical working groups and HIV treatment and prevention. She has mentored many young professionals in HIV programming and health systems work and continues to be engaged in implementation science and operational research on HIV prevention, care, and treatment.
