Emma Mitchell, PhD, RN—is a public health nurse scholar, and an Associate Professor and Director of Global Initiatives at the University of Virginia School of Nursing. Her research is focused on preventing cervical cancer through implementing innovative technologies and models for cervical cancer screening and early detection designed for low resourced settings, including in Appalachian Virginia and the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua. She also conducts community-based participatory research regarding the health impacts of climate change in Nicaragua, including capacity building for disaster preparedness in bilateral partnership with the BICU School of Nursing there. Her work has earned funding from the National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center, UVA’s Global Infectious Diseases Institute, and the Jefferson Trust Foundation.
