Yumna Moosa is an amateur mathematician who became a doctor, inspired by a naive desire to “help people.” She studied pure mathematics during her medical internship, and completed a part-time Masters degree in bioinformatics during her service, pregnancy and first year of parenthood. In order to integrate her various skills and experiences, she has chosen a career in science, harnessing advanced computational techniques to address questions that affect the health of vulnerable people. Her PhD project combines conventional epidemiology, genomics and geospatial data to better understand and interrupt TB transmission in rural South Africa. Other research interests include: statistical learning and causal inference, and gender-based violence and women’s health.
