Dorcas Muthiani: Leading by Example, Mentoring the Next Generation

I am a nurse leader and currently serve as a Duty Manager at The Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Kenya. In this role, I oversee patient service delivery, address issues related to patient care, supervise healthcare teams, mentor nurses into leadership, and coordinate patient transfers between other health facilities and my institution.

A key focus of my leadership is succession planning. I empower emerging leaders by recognizing and appreciating their contributions. Through constructive feedback, I create a supportive and friendly environment that encourages growth and fosters an open mindset toward professional development. As a role model, my juniors have appreciated my approach to comprehensive handovers, problem-solving, and health promotion. As a result, many have expressed a desire to become great leaders by emulating my style and mentorship.
