Dr. Sarah Nyagabona: Advancing Patient-Centered Breast Cancer Care

As a clinical oncologist and researcher, I am dedicated to improving breast cancer care in Tanzania by addressing key challenges such as diagnostic delays, treatment access, and stigma—especially for women facing both cancer and HIV. At Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), I lead the Patient Navigation Program, a vital initiative that removes barriers to care, enhances treatment adherence, and provides much-needed psychosocial support for breast cancer patients.

With survival rates in Tanzania remaining low due to late-stage diagnoses and limited access to biomarker testing and targeted therapies, I focus on implementing patient-centered, scalable solutions using implementation science and human-centered design. My goal is to ensure that all women receive timely, equitable, and comprehensive cancer care.

Beyond my clinical work, I am committed to advancing women’s leadership in health. I mentor young female researchers and clinicians while advocating for stronger health systems through evidence-based policy change. Through WomenLift Health, I aim to expand my impact, drive meaningful health transformation, and empower more women to lead in global oncology.
