Rachel Knopf Shey: Leading with Authenticity

As a working mother, I embrace the power of showing up authentically. Parenthood is a significant part of my life, and I believe no one should have to compartmentalize or minimize such an integral role. Thriving in the workplace is possible when organizations provide flexibility and empathy, enabling working mothers like me to give not less, but more. With validation and support from my team, supervisor, and institution, I can fully channel my passion, creativity, and intellect into my work.

In my role, I co-create leadership development content designed for women in public and global health. My work helps build inclusive, equitable workplace cultures where women want to lead, grow, and stay. Research consistently shows that such environments foster stronger employee engagement and contribute to greater organizational success. I have the privilege of collaborating with some of the most brilliant and inspiring women, whose journeys fuel my own passion for this work.

As I write this, my daughter and her friend are playing and laughing nearby during their school break—a scene that reflects my reality. Far from detracting from my work, these moments remind me of the resilience, creativity, and excellence that women bring when empowered to lead with their whole selves.
