Clare Cutland

Clare Cutland is the Scientific Coordinator of the African Leadership in Vaccinology Expertise (ALIVE). ALIVE was selected as the flagship entity for the University of the Witwatersrand in 2016, and aims to create African expertise and leadership in vaccinology training, research and advocacy.

She oversees the Master of Science (MSc Med) program in Vaccinology and coordinates the biennial Afro-ADVAC short course in Vaccinology at the University of the Witwatersrand. With extensive experience as a clinical trialist, she has led numerous vaccine trials and studies in South Africa, with a particular focus on maternal and infant immunization. Her contributions to vaccine safety include active participation in the Brighton Collaboration, the development and field-testing of GAIA definitions, and conducting active vaccine safety surveillance studies across multiple African countries. She has also co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles and a book chapter.
