Dr. Josephine Kibaru is a Reproductive Health Expert, Obstetrician/Gynecologist by training who ventured into health leadership early in her career. She started off as a clinician in a District hospital in 1992, and subsequently became the Medical Officer of Health (DMOH) of the district in 1996. She was the second female DMOH in Kenya which was no mean feat at the time.
She has held various leadership positions in the health and Development sectors for over 30 years, both at the national and regional levels. She headed the Division of Reproductive Health and the Department of Family Health in Kenya for a period of 10 years. Subsequently, she was appointed the Director General at the Commonwealth Regional Health Secretariat (East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community) in Arusha. She coordinated health advocacy and policy issues in 11 countries of the East and Southern Africa for four years. Her last tenure in the public sector was as the Director General of the Kenya National Council for Population and Development (NCPD) for six years. She coordinated Population and Development issues linking the public sector and the non-governmental organizations including the civil society.
She has mentored many leaders in the health and Population sectors, since she has had a chance to interact with a lot of people in the sectors over many years. She has networks at county, nationally and globally, since she has represented the government in many regional and global forums.
