Dr. Mazyanga Lucy Mazaba

Dr. Mazyanga Lucy Mazaba is a Public Health expert and Regional Director for Eastern Africa at Africa CDC, with 28 years of experience in virology, epidemiology, pandemic preparedness, and health systems strengthening.

Transitioning from a Medical Laboratory Scientist to a Public Health Leader, she has played a pivotal role in pandemic response, strategic communication, scientific research, and policy development. She holds a Doctorate of Science (DSc.) in Public Health and is a specialist in crisis communication, stakeholder engagement, and institutional capacity building.

A prolific researcher, Dr. Mazaba has co-authored nearly 160 scientific articles, co-published five books, and contributed to the establishment of the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI). She actively engages in global and regional public health initiatives, focusing on disease surveillance, evidence-based policymaking, mental health, and Social Behavioral Change Communication (SBCC).

Beyond public health, she is a philanthropist, subsistence farmer, and an active member of Rotary and the Round Table Family (Ladies’ Circle and Tangent Clubs). She also chairs the Special Olympics Zambia Board and has served on multiple boards.

Her leadership has earned her several accolades, including:

  • Stanbic Bank Zambia Anakazi Women in Health Award (2022)
  • Zambia Health Research Conference Outstanding Health Communications Award (2024)

She was instrumental in organizing the 2023 Conference for Public Health in Africa (CPHIA), which convened over 5,100 global health leaders, and recently led the inaugural Eastern Africa Region Global Health Security Summit in Mombasa, Kenya.
